Subject: Railroads in Iowa?

Iowa
Traveling around Iowa all of my life (39) I've always noticed what seems like a lot of abandoned rail roads. Some are completely gone but you can guess one went through at one time since the remaining streets and buildings are running at an angle to everything else or some remain but are paved for a bike trail.

I get that times change and not every little town is going to have an implement dealer or lumberyard to drop stuff off at but there is a lot of grain to move yet. I assume it had to do with money like everything. So what series of events happened to kill these off?
