Rib is easiest place to brand, but the rib leather is the most valuable, so a rib brand scars do the most damage to the hide from a tanner's point of view.
Shoulder brands do the least damage as far as loss of value to the hide, but are the hardest to apply.
Hip/rump brands are probably the best balance of pros/cons.
