SW MI | All apparatus have increased in price about 100% over the last 6-7 years. Manipulation, inflation, costs of doing business. An average pumper is going to run anywhere from $800k-1 million, add 10-20% for contingencies and you won’t take delivery for 2 years.
A lot of manufacturers are offering “cookie cutter“ trucks that are a little bit cheaper and have immediate availability. There may not be a cabinet where you like it, but at least you have a truck that runs and is available now.
As stated earlier, service is the key on custom apparatus. These aren’t mass produced, and aside from the chassis, everything is put together piece by piece. That leaves a lot of room for error and a lot of service potential up the road. You might save $50,000 on a truck from “Fire Trucks
‘R Us”, but it’s worthless if nobody can come out to service it.
