Have to register your brand with the state.
You submit your brand along with your first, second and maybe even third preference for location (can't remember for sure)
Left side or right side. Front shoulder, rib or hip. So 6 options total.
When we first registered our brand they gave us left side shoulder because someone in the area had a similar brand on the hip.
When we noticed they sold out of cows and let their brand expire, we submitted again for left side rib and left side hip. So now we have all 3 spots registered with our brand on the left side.
