Get the calves dry, I always put the cow in the chute first and try to get the calf to nurse. I feel it’s important for that calf to nurse. If some reason it won’t latch, I attempt to bottle feed, and tube as a last resort. Tubing is a quick path for a stupid calf IMO. I’m extremely anal about caves having colostrum within 2hrs after birth.
I’ll milk a cow out in then chute to get her colostrum before going to bagged colostrum. 2pt minimum on the first nursing. | |
