Alberta
First defense bolus or paste to all calves for extra protection from scours if they are slow to suck, 1cc AD and 1cc sel E for white muscle, plus 5cc Oxy LA or Liquimiacin LA all ASAP after birth for prevention sepsis from bacteria picked up through the navel. All heifers calves get a bag get a bag of Immustart 50IG because sometimes it takes a while for heifers to start producing milk or it is like thick glue and then we know the calf has had colostrum. We will eartag every morning if the weather is -15 or warmer and not windy. If it is forecast cold, or windy we glue a cardboard tag to them and wait to tag until calves are a few days old and active. We wait to band and dehorn until calves are a few days to a few weeks older so we know they have sucked and are healthy. Cows are usually in a small corral or small pasture, so we do it on foot with a wooden cane to catch calve and for protection from protective cows.
