Eastern NE KS | I hear you. I have a picture of 20 cows 3/4 submerged on a hot July day the are about 15' from the edge of the pond, just chilling. If I can call it that. They are standing on rock and not in mud. I'm not thrilled with the manure load but have not changed anything.
Dad rented and started managing the land in '66-67. We bought the land in '93. In the 70's 2,4-5T was pulled. Before new chemistry was introduced I watch 100's of hedge and locust sprouts appear across the land. While I have a handle on half the acreage, the other half tends to back slide to less productive 'weeds/brush'. I suppose I'm whining, it just a resource drain that needs more than I seem to give it.
The pond is just the opposite! It is a wonderful thing on the property. I marvel at its utility.
Walnut? I try to keep them aroundj. We harvest $18000 in walnut logs back in 2015. The logger said we harvested the trees in trouble but left the safe trees. In 5 years we can harvest again for about the same revenue. That said, I'm don't worry about shade until many brushy acres are more productive in grass.
I failed to mention (Asian-Japanese) Honeysuckle is another invader. This darn stuff is growing anywhere and everywhere next to an existing brushy area. I think I have a selective control identified. Extension folks suggested glyphosate. That's a no go in native (preferred species) pasture.
