I think the biggest problem with the later carbureted engines was all of the emission controls that they started adding in the 1960s and 1970s. This was before the era of computers, and so the reliability and functionality of those early vacuum and temperature operated emission system devices left a lot to be desired. Then computer controls and throttle body injection started coming on board in the 1980s, and fuel injection followed soon afterwards, which eventually made the carburetor obsolete.

I have a carbureted 1957 Chevy with zero emission controls and points-style distributor that gives me not one lick of trouble or hiccup, and I drive it fairly often. In summary, carb only engines without the emissions stuff work just fine in my opinion. Think most lawnmowers.
