NW IA | This thread reminded me of an article in a dairy magazine years ago.
It was about a herd out west that had the highest milk production in the nation for its breed.
They asked the owner about forage testing. He said they fed a large percentage of the ration as baled alfalfa and forage testing had mixed results, so they settled on getting several bales from different lots at the hay yard and put them out a long the head-locks. Whichever hay the cows went to and cleaned up first was the hay they bought. It seldom matched the best testing hay. | |
