If you’ve owned cattle on your operation for 10+years, you are more of an expert than any outsider could ever be. In those 10years you will have watched a pile of cows drop out of your program. Hopefully you’ve found ways to retain cows longer than when you started through trial and error.

Personally, I like a 1350lb mature 4-5yo cow raising a 205 day 7 weight steer. It allows the feeder to hit the April fat market with them and I don’t have to wean, background, or run yearlings. On the flip side, if going for grass cattle, the smaller framed cow will save feed for backgrounding the calf come winter. Also should have more grass to run yearlings if it fits your program. A lot of ways to skin this cat, don’t worry what the experts say, they whiffed it big time in 2015. If they were so good at marketing, a firm would have them hired instead of a magazine.
