MountainValleyFarmer - 1/31/2026 15:17 What do you give baby calves at birth and why? Do you band, ear tag, vaccinate? If so with what? Also, I know this is a big ask and varies by environment but what is your percentage of live weaned calves? I take the Ranger through the calving pasture, maybe walk through the fenced woods, but do nothing except count them, take a picture of the calf, record the birth date and tell sex if I can. I assign them a number in Cattlemax which is the cow eartag number plus the birth year letter (which for 2026 will be P), such as 187P, which will be their ID in the computer until they get a new eartag when first worked by the vet, usually in July. I've long since given up trying to tag new calves. With cows on Mineral lyx barrels year round there's no need for any shots as long as they are up and nursing colostrum. Since switching to May 1 start of calving I can't recall losing a newborn calf. But bulls are all high CED or their sons and heifers and cows are all retained out of successful calvers. |
