Gold is an element, diamond is a configuration of carbon atoms. Carbon is readily available and near free so you just need to move the atoms around. Changing another element into gold requires nuclear physics which is not generally cheap or easy and only happens in nature within stars or close proximity to radioactive elements. I would bet that asteroid mining will change the supply of gold before transmutation. There are actual asteroids with millions of tons of gold floating out in space right now. Retrieving them is an engineering problem.

There is gold on earth that may be worth going after now, that previously wasn’t.
