He would just politely say not interested and walk away continuing doing whatever work he was doing.
I was maybe 10 or so, and was always taught to be polite. I mentioned it kind of seemed rude the way he would just continue on with whatever he was doing until the intruder gave up.
A man of few words usually, he simply said "I don't want to waste their time and I don't want them wasting mine".
I've remembered that all these years.
