My dad was a teenager during the depression, so saw things different than we do today. During the 40-50's the local junk yards would unbolt rather than torch old cars etc. For a couple dollars you could buy a 5 gal. bucket of used bolts. He would spend more time sorting thru those used bolts to save 50 cents, than drive the 3 miles to the hardware store for a new one.
Hardware store is long gone. I have bolt bins and tend to get a new bolt instead of cleaning threads etc.
