Subject: RE: Hay feeding question

Driftless SW Wisconsin
I have used a bale wagon as you picture. It's hard for to the cows to break up a tight bale even when turned with the bale axis in the same direction as the wagon length. This is especially true with longer stem first crop hay baled at high baler pressure.

The following year I backed off the baler pressure which helped somewhat.

If the hay in the bottom is not very palatable, as suggested clean it out.

For comparison, just take one bale , remove twine or net wrap and set it on end on the ground and see how they eat that bale. In this cold weather we need to make it as easy as we can for the cows to fill those rumen furnaces.
