The idea of older cheaper equipment sounds great but not feasible in reality….our production can’t happen on older stuff even it doesn’t break down
100% agree to a point. There seems to be some sort of sweet spot where you can justify running older and wrenching but still be big enough to make a living. Kind of a, hey let’s just buy 2 for a spare kind of deal. Once you get so big you need more reliable and bigger stuff and that depreciates quicker. As I’ve added land and tried to be more efficient with less people and larger stuff I’ve realized some of that. Running a 2577 combine right now (I don’t own it I rent it, but that’s a story for another day), but knowing its value and depreciation and parts we’ve put it the depreciation isn’t that bad. Its bones will get thin enough I won’t be able to wrench it myself someday. The next purchase will be a much worse unit for depreciation I’m afraid…. |
