NE North Dakota | I live on the SE corner of a small town. When the wind blows hard I typically get a significant snow bank on the south side of my house and this of course comes with black dirt. This house was built in 1981. We brought in a significant amount of dirt to "build up" the house which is on the lower elevation portion of town and fear of subsurface water issues. The house is approx 3ft higher elevation than neighboring homes. The yard was graded approprietly for water drainage and home building. Interesting enough 2 years ago we had a foundation crack which was allowing subsurface water into the home. Hired concrete experts to seal the outside wall and we also added drain tile to that area. No issues since. Also at this time we resurveyed the yard and noticed a "hump" in the yard approx half way out from home to street curb. We addressed this by removing some dirt and regrading the yard for drainage.
One of two things happened 1: the house sunk or 2: during the winter months we would collect snow there with dirt as previously mentioned. The snow would melt leaving the dirt/debris there. Over the past 35ish years this dirt created the "hump" we had to remove for water runoff. So I do believe enough dirt has moved even in my lifetime to change the landscape and our fields reduction in topsoil. We have implemented a lot more no till and cover crops the past 10 years, hopefully we are inhibiting some of this erosion | |
