North Central Indiana | What I always try to figure out is why if all this tillage is losing so much soil where is it going to? For example our farmyard, we have an aerial picture from 1934, oldest we can find, that shows the farm yard almost the exact size it is today with fields surrounding 3 sides just as it is today. The field to the west and south of the farmyard have the exact same boundary line between yard and field as back then. It’s been plowed every year for as long as my grandpa could remember. So at least early 30s. We still run a chisel plow in the fall today. Conveniently the topography is still a nice flat transition from yard to field. Which would mean we’ve either lost just as much dirt from under the yard and buildings and trees as we have from the field or we haven’t lost any. Maybe I should call my local NRCS and ask them to help me figure it out | |
