They didn't just ignore them, they went around them. Thiokol was the contractor for the SRB's and their engineers directly said that they wouldn't sign off on the launch because it was outside of the o-rings design specs. NASA was under political pressure to launch so NASA signed off on it instead which sealed its fate.
