North Central Indiana
Depends what you’re asking. Total cost for N applied through MAP, whatever primary N source you want (NH3 in my calculator), N in your starter mix, AMS? I have that cost, but I don’t use it to try to find a cheaper option for total program. I’m applying MAP based on phosphate tests, AMS for sulfur needs, my starter mix is getting a combination of things and I want 30 pounds of N in that mix so I’m fairly set with that as well.
I variable rate MAP and AMS, starter is constant. Then I take those overlayed rates of N plus o.m. and yield history, yield goal, previous crop, etc to make a prescription for NH3.
So I know my total cost of N, using the costs of those products times N/unit. I guess you could say N from NH3 is my cheapest way to apply since I’m covering all those acres anyway and it’s the cheapest N available. So if I want to add N I do it that way vs adding some more 28 in my starter or spreading more MAP per acre because that costs more and also increases my P costs.
If you’re talking cost of primary N then its very simple cost of the product divided by N/unit. Application equipment cost is a wash in my book if you want to include that. Storage could maybe include if you think you can buy bulk UAN or Urea and be cheaper than NH3 from a retailer.
