| Research Gate is one way to access a variety of scientific research articles without being affiliated with a university library system.
Sometimes the articles are directly downloadable, other times you can use the site to send a request for the article to the lead author.
Some of the articles are from highly respected journals with strong review processes, others are from pay-to-play journals with much weaker review processes...
IMHO the biggest challenge with searching the web for info (including info published in scientific journals) is that positive results (results showing that a product or practice worked) are much more likely to be reported than negative results and its human nature to find what you are looking for (confirmation bias).
