Edit to add: I'm not saying every field needs to be 1 acre sampled or that it needs to be every year. I did this on a relatively small field that the land owner wants to apply huge rates of fertility to see if we see any yield changes over the next few years. He is foregoing rent and covering the seed so it's worth it to me.
I also did 1 acre grids on a field that needs lime. It doesn't need a uniform amount so I'm saving myself probably 40-50% of the lime i would have applied if I had done it at a blanket rate.
Other fields we have at 2.5 or 5 acre grids. But I kind of like to do the 1 acre the very first time to see what I'm really dealing with and then over time we can change that to larger grids or zones. Right or wrong I don't know. Feels like it's working okay.
