Holly Hill, SC | I haven't run a disc over my land in 30 years. We strip till as we plant. That is the only tillage. Few years back I tried multiple different cover crops. Everything has been a major yield reduction. Planted in green cereal rye: on average lost about 40 bu/acre. Tried some legumes vetch, clover, peas. Nothing but yield drag. We plant corn in March so we have to terminate in early February. The legumes do not grow long enough to fixate nitrogen. I tried growing the legumes between the rows of corn then terminating them at sidedress. All the cover crop did was compete for sunlight and introduce bugs in my corn crop. Other problems included rabbits and mice either eating the seed or eating the plant. If I ever do cover crops again, I will look very hard at making sure my corn seed is at least 2.5" deep in soil.
