| This will be my 2nd year planting green. And 2nd year with covers. I jumped in wide open with both feet. I went from no covers to drilling every acre.
I used to pull soil samples and we had to quit in September a couple years ago. I was bending the probe and barely getting 1” in the ground. I went 25 miles north to a farmer who has been using covers for 15 years and his soil was like April soil! It was amazing and sold me on covers.
Drilling is the best IMO. I can drill 100# at 8mph and get great results. I also use a crimper and feel it’s best to crimp for weed control as well as not hurting the corn yield. If you move more N up front you shouldn’t see issues. I drilled 100# of rye 10# peas 5# vetch 4# clover 2# radish in front of beans. Same mix for corn but lowered to 50# rye. I’m shooting for zero herbicide on beans and livestock integration is my next step!
This pic was June 25th when I was making a herbicide pass. Only previous herbicide was a pint of 24D in October. We had record rain fall in April and May. This would have been solid pigweed without the rye! 50# drilled
