As AgDeal said cereal, rye would probably help. Whenever the ground is fit to drive over this spring, take a FERTILIZER buggy and spread 40 to 60 pounds an acre. The rye should be over a foot high by May 1. I farm a lot farther north than you and have found that if the rye doesn’t come up in the fall, it will come up in the spring…. Dennis.

I have found that on soil with problems I always fair better with corn. Fertilize for just a little better than you think you’re going to receive, and keep the planting population. At no more than 8 bushels of expected yield per thousand kernels dropped….Dennis
