Subject: RE: Priming the pump when converting CRP to crops

NW IL, Mercer County
We didnt do anything special. The ground is HEL so we chemically terminated the CRP and have been no-tilling it since day 1. Most years it has been getting cereal rye cover cropped. N source has been 100% spring applied UAN/topdress urea vs my usual fall nh3/spring UAN split apply on other farms. Soil pH was a little low so a couple small applications of lime have been applied. K levels are low to mid 200’s lba and have been steady despite fertilizing to slowly build. P levels have went from 40-60 lbs avg over 12 years with the U of I “build to 40, maintenance to 60” methods.
