Subject: RE: Heifers being held back?

North Central Kansas
My brother and I sell our excess heifers as replacements. We have been doing it for the last three years. We AI all our cows so we end up with a high percentage of AI sired heifers. We kept back 26 of the top heifers out of our best cows and sold 47 AI sired and 30 bull sired heifers. All our heifers have their bangs vaccination and have been checked by our vet. We sold the bull breds to a neighbor that develops heifers and calves them out and sells them. The AI sired went to a heifer development guy a couple of hours away. They sold within two hours of being advertised.

Our bull sired heifers are sold at steer price. The AI sired are steer price plus $2-400. This year we will be weighing all our calves at birth so we have that data. We weigh everything when we wean and weigh the heifers again when we do the breeding exam.

Our cows and bulls we use are Red Angus.
