If you are only grazing in the fall don't use rye. Even planted early rye will only get about 4" tall in the fall. Rye is growing roots instead to help it survive the winter. Now oats would work better. Oats is trying to grow like crazy in the fall. It will keep growing until the temp drops to 20 or below for several hours. Oats will winterkill but provide probably 3 times the fall grazing that rye will.
