Washington county Kansas | If you have good grass to graze just put out some free choice round bales of hay. When we graze rye or oats we use straw bales or the brome bales that are too weedy to sell. It just gives them some dry matter and stretches the grazing out a little longer.
If you have any wheat stubble or can rent some from a neighbor, plant some sudan right after harvest or oats in August and you can get some very cheap gain. The oats usually lasts till Thanksgiving or Christmas here in northern kansas. Here the oats will winter kill so the ground is clean in the spring. You have to watch out after a frost on sudan as it can be deadly to the cattle for a couple weeks.
I think there are ways to make it work, but it is very capital intensive and comes with plenty risk. Good luck! | |
