So this data right or wrong points to contact highs? The reason both steers and heifers are down about the same amount is not that heifers are being retained. It is most likely due to just fewer USA cattle of both sexes. Pastures that change hands are being plowed up for corn, beans, govt subsidies and gifts and winter vacations. Why taking care of cattle and frozen waterers in -20F weather when you can just plant beans next spring and be assured uncle sam will take care of you? Beef cattle get nothing except calls for more imports.
