Leesburg, Ohio | I am pretty sure we could have bought a new feeder wagon for far less than the cost of the steel in our structure.
Yes, the concrete would have been similar either way.
There are multiple reasons we did not consider replacing our old feeder wagon:
1) We don't have to drive out in the pasture to load the feeder, opening and closing gates, dealing with mud, or:
2) We don't have to pull feeder wagon in and out of pasture to load at the barn, opening and closing gates, and dealing with mud.
3) We can open one small gate at the barnlot end of the hay bunk to load bales right in front of the hay barn on gravel and concrete, and not drive thru the cattle or worry about them getting thru gate.
4) We can drive thru the hay bunk and the cattle aprons to scrape out waste hay in the bunk and manure off the aprons.
The steel cost around $6,000. A new large feeder wagon would probably be at least $3000. For that difference, I'll take what we have. And the cattle seem to waste far less hay now.
