We used to get a couple bridge planks fastened side by side for a skid for things like that.
It doesn't hurt the road, even if it is asphalt.
Probably can space them a bit apart with a brace cross ways in front of where you want the boulder to sit.
Roll the boulder on and put a cross brace or 2 behind it.
One could put blocking beside it, if desired.
