There have also been long periods of time when stocks have not been that good of investment. What you pay has a lot to do with what potential earnings there are in the future.

Dollar cost averaging in for many years is one thing. Buying in at the top is another.

When brokerage firms say "past earnings is no indication of future earnings', they are not kidding.
