Latimer Iowa | I would think you could buy a running 5400 much cheaper then the work and labor of switching an engine. We had a 5460 that was in great shape that brought 17,000 on big iron about 10 years ago with a 644 4 row head. Kooima has some wear parts but if you smoke a gearbox or a hydro parts are expensive and hard to get. The J knife setup is nothing special unless it has been converted to duradrum. If you have hills and plan on pulling tandem wagons, ours were 716, 716a deeres, the 2ed versions will struggle, the 4 wd ones are hydraulic 4wd, so really knock ground speed. A 5400 is 20 years older then a 9500, its doubtful its just a bolt in conversion.
I would guess a 5400 is just as wore out as your "shot new holland". I would skip all the way up to a 50 series or find a good pull type. Nothing about a self propelled chopper is cheap to repair.
Edit to add a pic of the 5460 I still have.
