Subject: current economic conditions

Pittsburg, Kansas

I'm past the "must own land" phase. I have plenty already that requires paying taxes and some maintenence of terraces and tree rows. I know that is not a "normal" farmer thing. Most want to buy land till the day they die. I can take it or leave it. I'm having a lot of fun with my silver and gold right now.

Right now my focus is trying to lose the least. I think some time in the next ten years we as a nation are in for tough times. Sometimes losing the least is the best you can do. Fortunately for me I am in a position that any one area can be clobered and I will still be quite alright financially. I could not say that for most of my farming career.

Warren Buffet used to say diversification is for those who do not know what they are doing. I absolutely agree with that statement for those trying to grow a business or get ahead financially. Find what you are good at it and do a lot of it.

But at 71 and well past my prime, diversification doesn't look so bad in current economic conditions.
