I missed out completely on the massive stock run up in the 1980's as everything was in fixed income sources that paid 13% at the start but ended up under 8% before I got smart and moved into Equities. But I was also just starting out and didn't have anything accumulated that it really mattered.
I tend too Value investing always in mutual funds never individual stocks.
36 years of positive returns averaged 12.7%
7 years of negative returns averaged -10.8%
longest stretch of losses was 2000-2002 when I lost money all three years (thanks Greenspan)
