Lots of hand work in the early generations plus very complex drying and storage requirements compared to storing corn for the commodity market. You are also paying for the hundreds of research crosses that don't make it; the dead ends that are as much a part of research as the few that actually make it to market. Don't want to pay for modern seed? You can still get open pollinated and save your own seed. Your yields will be less, but that's for you to do the arithmetic. There is a reason corn is more popular than barley. For most farmers it makes financial sense to use good genetics. | |
