Bottom of the Mitten | 80-100 gallon stock tank and break the ice out a couple times a day. It takes a long time to freeze it up if you keep the ice removed off the top. Put some straw bales around it and it would last even longer. I can't see southern MD getting cold enough for long enough that you couldn't just break the ice out. Water heaters take a lot of juice to run so I cant see a solar setup being a good option, especially at night when its dark and colder out
