Southeast Colorado | Straight native grass (which is how most ranch operations are set up) would be about 30 acres to the pair. You would probably have to supplement some protein in the winter, and have hay on hand for storms.
We've always just run our cows picking up the remnants of our crops.........and on wheat pasture that was mostly taken to grain after pulling the cattle off. I've never dedicated cropping acres to the cattle though.
A couple of years ago we had 100 pair.........but sold half off. Kept 15 heifers from this last crop. Probably will just keep them all now for a few years, short of a runt.
You know........back not that long ago we always figured we were making about $500 a calf. Now with it closer to $1500 or better........creating over $200k of net income with 150 cows looks pretty attractive. We're already set up to take care of them. And have had cattle in some form or fashion for most of the 60 years of my life.
