Alberta
Different colors for different owners, calves tagged same color and number as cows in right ear for sorting purposes, cows get a permanent number brisket tag with year letter for year born when they are bred heifers before they calve, I dont like numbers for years because many cows in the heard are older than 10 years as well it does not work for the cloud record book if 2 active cows have the same number. They keep their calf ear tag as long as it stays in the ear so we can visually see who their mother was. Twins also get a 1 or 2 or an M or F in the bottom corner of their left ear tag so as we know when sorting to ship m/f twins. Then we are not going back to record books. If a calf is fostered, they keep the mothers tag in the right ear and get a foster mother tag in the left ear for visual sorting purposes. Cow brisket numbers start at 1 every year followed by a year letter. depending on ownership, we may groups of 10, 15 ,20 or 25 when tagging new cows, each year starting at the same number for whoever in the family owns calves. eg, I have 1 to 49, child 1 has 50 to 59, child 2 has 60 to 69 etc, This way it is easy to visually tell ownership also without going back to books.
