NE Iowa | We use Z-tags and their original markers. We have 10 yr old cows that can still read, others may have faded some by year 7-8. I use yellow for cows & heifers, blue for bull calves, to make it easily visual when sorting. Pic attached of the information and placement I use. We are a registered herd and sell seedstock, so records are very important. We tag within first week or so of birth. Large digits in middle bottom are the tag/tattoo number 533N on example. Born in 2025 (so start with the 5 for year born) but the 'N' at end is the recommended letter corresponding to the year, and can separate from 2025 and 2015 born animals in records. The 33 indicates the 33rd calf born for the year. Numbers in lower left/right corners indicate birthday (3 - 13 indicates born March 13th). Middle left number 323L is Dam's ID, Top number 2310 indicates the sire, and 65 on middle right indicates 65# birthweight. Easy to get a lot of info from the tags when out in pasture showing cattle, even if I don't have my sales sheets in back pocket. We also have cattle from two of our partners in our pastures or lots at various times. Partner #1 uses Purple tags for females & Orange for bulls, Partner #2 uses Pink tags for females & Green tags for bulls. Again, easy to distinguish ownership at a glance. One of them would use "N533" for their 33rd calf last year and other would have used "5N33", so slight variations and unique numbers between us all.
