ND | I have a 20x60 pole barn in my lot that I'm currently not really utilizing. It has pretty short side walls so the only thing that fits inside is my skid steer and it is in the middle of my corral set up so I've been considering setting up an indoor working facility. It currently has a 12' door on the south end wall. Outside on the SE corner of the barn I currently have a sorting pen that allows me to put cattle in to separate pens on the west, east, and north side. I think it would work best to cut another door in to the NE corner of the building to bring cattle in while working. Outside I would have a 12' wide crowding alley coming in to the barn. To maximize the use of space inside I'm considering a bud box type setup over a tub to crowd the cattle in to a double alley that would lead to the the chute. I'm concerned how well this will work since the cattle won't have a chance to turn back the direction they came from like a traditional bud box setup would be. I've never used a double alley before, so maybe that will be a big enough opening to draw them in to the alley from the box set up. I'd really like to keep the alley and chute to the west side as there is a walk door also on the east wall that we use to get in and out of the barn to the sorting pen. I drew up a sketch of what I have in mind. I know it's crude and not to scale, but I'd like to honest feedback before I go cut a new door in to the barn and realize there would have been a better way to design it. On the sketch there is 2 swing gates in the bud box that will swing 180 degrees. I'd build another gate in to the SE corner of the box that allows access to chute/alley and I'd build it wide enough to let a cow through if I need to bring a cow in from one of the south pens during calving. Also, sketch doesn't show it, but i would have enough room to put a single alley in between the double alley and chute if I so choose.
