Subject: RE: Tagging Talk

NW Missouri
The cows have white Ritchey tags in both ears. I order them from their website pre-printed with the numbers I need. I just ordered a batch yesterday and it cost $105.58 for 58 tags that will never fade. I can live with that. I love their tags, but their buttons suck (part of the reason we have one in each ear). We have found that Y-tex buttons last better, so that's what we use now. Calves get one orange tag - heifers in the right ear, steers in the left. Use write-on Y-tex and write momma's number on it.

As far as the system, first number is the year they were born, then the next 2 numbers are random from 00 to 99. If cow 330 has a heifer in 2026 that we decide to keep, then we would tag it as 630, unless that number is already taken. Obviously, that doesn't always work, and as we have increased the size of our herd, we ran out of 2 digit numbers, so some of them are getting used more than once. But you can still tell at a quick glance how old they are, and for the majority it's easy to tell which cow family they come from.
