Subject: RE: Scott Bessent on home ownership

“Approximately 7.1% of American tax filers are estimated to be landlords. As of early 2026, this represents roughly 10.6 million individuals who declare rental income.”

“Roughly 9% of U.S. landlords own a portfolio of more than 10 rental properties.“

“As of early 2026, the total population of the United States is over 343 million, with U.S. Census Bureau estimates placing it around 343.1 million in January 2026, following an estimate of 340.1 million in mid-2024, showing continued growth.”

So 1 in 340

As far as all these anecdotal stories go. Here’s a lesson I was taught a long time ago in high school.

“Statistics imply that anecdotal stories, while compelling and emotionally resonant, are generally unreliable for drawing broad conclusions because they lack representative samples, control for variables, and often suffer from cognitive biases, meaning a single story can't prove or disprove a general trend, but rather highlights a specific, potentially skewed, experience. While stories can spark interest, statistics reveal actual patterns, showing that individual cases (anecdotes) often misrepresent the larger reality (data), making rigorous data essential for valid understanding.”
