Use Ritchey engraveable tags for both cows and calves. I use the white ones that are back on the inside. Cows get 3 digit number. First digit is year born and other two digits just get keep going up. So replacement heifers I saved from last spring are 5xx numbers. The 5 tells me born in 2025. If I save 10 heifers they might 525 -534. If I save 10 heifers that are born this spring they will be 635 - 644. I tend to keep cows for quite a while. So I might have a 2 year old heifer calving this spring that is 481 but I also might have a 424 cow that was born in 2014. Nice knowing cow age just looking at number. And telling the difference between 2 and 12 or 3 and 13 year old cow is easy. I tag the calves with the mother's tag number. I feed out my calves and the keep that tag in the feedlot. I just make all the tags before the cows calves. That way they are ready to go and is easy with the engraveable tags. Heifers that get saved as replacements get retagged with their own number at weaning or before breeding.
