We do this same thing. Makes sorting steers and heifers easier when they are walking at you.
I use larger blank alflex on calves. Cow number on bottom 2/3 and month and day on top with an udder score, E excellent, G good, F fair. No fair udders calves get kept.
Also cut a corner off the tag anytime I decide not to keep her, etc late born, small, poor, attitude, or cow problems, then she gets an implant also. This is done at preweaning, weaning, OCHV time, or prebreeding time.
On the cows I’m now using 3 digit pre printed alflex tags with the first digit the year they are born. Then hand write the decade number up on top.
