TX & AR | For me the last 25 years....your situation may be different.... White for cows easiest to see and read. Use a paint pen, not a sharpie. Use plenty of paint when filling out tag, making bold print. Allflex maxi tag with a paint pen lasts years. Cow number written smaller on the neck of the tag leaving 3/4 of the tag for the calf's number. Write numbers as large as will fit. Use 3 digit number system, first digit is the last digit of the current year, second and third digit start with 01 and continue until 99. Spring and fall calving seasons so this spring starts with 601, fall calving starts with 651, that way you know if birthdate was spring or fall. If more than 100 cows use a 4 digit number system, apply the same concept. Heifer calves get white tag and a tattoo with same number as tag at birth. Bull calves get orange tag. All tags go in left year, tattoo in right. You didnt ask but....cut bull calves at birth with disposable scalpel. For me, a lot of information can be gotten from a three/four numbers and the color of the tag.
