We use one-piece Z-tags. Great retention. Handwritten lasts 5+ years but they do fade gradually. All one color. Calves get same number as mother at birth. Bull calves right ear, heifers left ear. If a heifer calf gets to stay as a replacement, she'll get a new cow number in the left ear.
