Thumb of Michigan | Wow, that was an eye opener for sure. Thank goodness that I'm in a different world.
The bull I'm presently using might not be NAT approved (except for Jim). He is a registered polled Herford. I bought him a couple of years ago, but don't like to have a bull around when not needed (grandchildren and I was taught never to trust a bull farther than you can throw him). Any how I sold him to another neighbor as a three-year-old for what I paid for him.
This year I 'leased' him back for 45 days to cover my 25 cows for 2 rolls of net wrap. Might just do the same next year, too. The bull covers two groups of cows at the neighbor's, ~20 head at each farm. So, this bull gets to cover around 65 cows a year, which is a little higher than the video talks about. Then again, he has 135+ days to do his job.
I guess as a STO and a Heinz 57 cow herd, things can be different. My previous bulls were SimAn, Maine, Polled Short, Herford, Poll Short Horn. Used each one for 1-3 years. There is still some Holstien in the distant blood line from the milking herd, that was converted over to beef with a Charolais, so I've got a couple of gray/whitish Holstein marking critters even. | |
