The only reason not to feed haylage is you need all the equipment to do the chopping and bagging and feeding. We make a bag of first crop hay since the equipment is around for corn silage anyway and it is really hard to get hay dry that time of year. If you are feeding hot fermented feed for energy you also want free choice high fiber hay for self regulation. Some guys have a religion around raising cattle with no overhead. If they can't do it with a bale bed on a 40 year old pickup the cows will just have to do without.
